H5N1 Bird Flu

The H5N1 Bird Flu is apparently an epidemic in the making, if you go by the U.S. Governments informational website birdflu.gov they don’t seem optimistic of us escaping the wrath of this incubating monster. One of the problems in combating the H5N1 Bird Flu is the lack of reporting by authorities in many of the countries of Asia.

Many politicians in the affected regions don’t want to anger the poultry farmers by having to wipe-out all their inventory and the inventory of every other farmer in the region. The worst of the worst is Vietnam. Not only do local officials refuse to report regional outbreaks, they refuse to compensate any farmers for their loses. This, in turn, causes whole regions to stay at risk for long periods of time, improving the odds of a successful Human to Human transmission. That’s when we see a global pandemic occur.

Computer model estimates built around the propagation rate of previous epidemics suggest that this one, if it comes, will be much faster & more deadly than the 1918 outbreak that killed between 50 to 100 million people in 12 months. According to John Peterson, founder of the think tank The Arlington Institute, its projected that between 300 million to 1 billion people will actually die this time around.

A majority of workshops and war games that simulate a full blown outbreak of the H5N1 Bird Flu outbreak show a rapid degeneration of our complex society. A majority of people will just not go anywhere, that includes staying home from work (for obvious and valid reasons). The worlds advanced transportation grid will spread this deadly flu strain world-wide within 6 weeks its predicted.

I heard on the radio this week that Tami Flu was NOT effective this year in helping to curtail the effects of the flu in the U.S. and Europe. This was the first year that has ever occurred and the CDC is now researching the problem. If Tami Flu no longer works on a run of the mill Flu Virus I don’t see how it could be effective in combating a deadly H5N1 Bird Flu strain.

The deadly H5N1 strain of avian influenza began to infect humans in late 2003 and has spread to 15 countries, killing 254 of the 407 people who have contracted it. The danger here of course is the incubation possibilities and how this Bird Flu could quickly evolve from Bird to Bird and Bird to Human transmission into a Human to Human transmission phase. The 1918 Spanish Flu was a Bird Flu as well, that evolved into a Human to Human transmission. This Bird Flu, if/when it incubates into a Human to Human transmission would turn our Recession into a Depression in a matter of weeks. No wonder the Feds and the U.N. are all over this.
