Effect Of Drugs On Families

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

Alcohol and Drug relapse occurs in the same way the addiction manifested itself to begin with. That is, by a series of counterproductive occurrences that can create a downward spiral. The relapse brings about the return of the alcohol or drug addiction in the person’s life and the self-destructive pattern that was associated with it. The path to alcohol and drug addiction recovery is lost and replaced by the addiction all over again.

The occasional drinking habit turns into a regular affair, if treated casually it becomes the necessity for sustenance. A major form of major depression is rare, and may include loss of ability to react to your environment with voluntary movement; excessive purposeless movement; unwillingness to speak or a resistance to follow directions or suggestions; bizarre or involuntary movements or facial expressions; or involuntarily repeating the words or movements of others in a way that is meaningless or purposeless.

Alcoholism can be compared to a tumor which turns malignant with every passing day of ignorance and carelessness.

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

Its been said that just as there is one disorder or disease labeled asthma, there would be one for addiction, covering all addictions; gambling, smoking, overeating, drugs, etc. It has been believed by many researchers that addiction is both a behavior which can be controlled to some extent and also a brain disease. Plus, since some testing with functional magnetic resonance imaging (FMRI) found that all addictions tend to cause nearly the same reactions inside the brain, there could be one type of control model for addiction health-related issues. Then one main treatment strategy or plan could be used to treat all addictions.

You will have to describe the reality of addiction, all of these components must be considered and understood. There are several essential components of addiction that are considered non-biological. These include cultural and social values, situational factors, ritual, developmental variations, personality differences and cognitive bias.

The risk of addiction can develop in any of the domains of influence such as the community, family, school and friends. Environmental risk factors are characteristics in a person’s surroundings that increase their likelihood of becoming addicted to drugs. A person is surrounded by such kind of a environment.

Do not Get Depressed During Pregnancy

Monday, March 15th, 2010

Do you feel like you are on the roller coaster of emotions during pregnancy? Few minutes of happy thoughts and after a second a move towards the dark and deep depression cave. Depression is common during pregnancy-between 14 percent and 23 percent of pregnant women will experience depressive symptoms while pregnant.

In 2003, approximately 13 percent of women took an antidepressant at some time during their pregnancy. Dr. Kimberly Ann Yonkers, one of the lead authors from Yale University said “Depression in pregnant women often goes unrecognized and untreated in part because of concerns about the safety of treating women during pregnancy.”

Both depression symptoms and the use of antidepressant medications during pregnancy have been associated with negative consequences for the newborn. Compared to those kids born to mothers without depression, infants born to women with depression have increased risk for irritability, less activity and attentiveness, and fewer facial expressions.

Depression and its symptoms are also associated with fetal growth change and shorter gestation periods. And while available research still leaves some questions unanswered, some studies have linked fetal malformations, cardiac defects, pulmonary hypertension, and reduced birth weight to antidepressant use during pregnancy.

Get Relief And Escape Gambling

Saturday, March 13th, 2010

When one watches movies like The Cincinnati Kid and Casino Royale, the first impulse is to go and hit the casinos. The way in which they flash their chips royally saying “blind and show” looks awesome. But did you know there are many around us who suffer from gambling addiction. Surprised?? Well this is not a new finding for those who have been studying this. Though a prevalent problem, but there always has been an argument about how to define it.

Medically termed as Ludomania, it is officially defined as “Problem gambling is characterized by many difficulties in limiting money and/or time spent on gambling which leads to adverse consequences for the gambler, others, or for the community.”

In simple words it is an urge to gamble more and more despite harmful and negative consequences. Such is the addiction that the addict never takes any pain to stop this horrible act of theirs. Few medical practitioners and professionals also term it as compulsive gambling. Although the term gambling addiction is more commonly attached to the recovery movement, pathological gambling is considered more of an impulse control disorder and consequently is not considered by the American Psychological Association to be an addiction.

Get Out OF The Alcohol Disease

Saturday, March 13th, 2010

Is alcoholism an incurable disease or is it something that can be overcome? For millions and millions of people this has been a topic that has been debated for years. Many people have been told that their alcoholism is something that they will always have and that by putting their faith in a higher power that they will be their only chance of recovery. Though even with this apathetic form of therapy, they are still told that relapse is part of recovery and that they will probably have slip ups on their way.

To some extent it reduced the stigma experienced by sufferers and has opened the door to treatment rather than punishment. It is the mainstay of the belief system of AA and NA groups who have been responsible for helping many to recover from a hopeless state. However there are many critics of the disease model, both on the grounds that there is little evidence to support it and that it may in fact be detrimental to recovery. One of the great controversies in respect of treatment of alcohol problems is the debate of whether alcoholism is a disease. There is little doubt that regarding alcoholism as a disease, rather than as a moral weakness, has brought benefits to alcoholics/addicts.
